Dirty Myrtle Mud Run

The morning started bright and early at 8am as volunteers gathered in the woods of the Waterbridge Community in Carolina Forest. The Mud Run is a 3-mile course for adults and approximately 1 mile for kids, complete with 20 different obstacles, challenges and of course MUD! Over 1100 people participated in the 3rd annual event and proceeds went to SOS Health Care Autism. Shannon Furtick with gsSCENE was able to gather 15 volunteers for the event (9 of whom were LGSers) and in return, Festival Promotions donated $1,000 to the Substitutes for Santa event in December.

It was an entertaining day and we were dispersed into various locations; some helped with check-in, some were getting waivers signed, refreshments were served on the course and the rest of us were stationed at specific obstacles to give instruction and cheer on the runners. At this event, most of us logged our first official 4 hours of volunteer time and it was a great start to kick off the required 100 hours of community service!

Orientation Day

Today was the day the newest group of LGS'ers, (Class 34) started our 9 month commitment to the community, and each other. Not knowing exactly what to expect, whom we would encounter or what kind of projects we were getting ourselves into, I think it felt a bit like the first day of school for all of us!

Today’s meeting took place in the Board Room at the Chamber of Commerce. Diana Greene, Executive Director of LGS, worked her way thru the agenda and introduced us to many key players of the organization who were all previous LGS’ers themselves. After listening to all of these people speak, it was refreshing to learn how good of friends they all became through this process and we were all hoping for the same within our class.

But, as with all things LGS, in addition to all of this “work” we also had the opportunity to “play.” Jeffrey Wisniewski (Class 31) from Carolina Improv helped loosen us up and get comfortable around each other. In addition to improv/one-liner games and a (very awkward!) observation exercise, we were also able to give ourselves superhero names and toss around an invisible ball…not too bad for the first day of class!

The day concluded with a Wine & Cheese reception in the Chamber lobby, which was graciously hosted by the LGS Board of Regents.  Each of us left today with a binder full of information to digest, a day full of memories and 30+ new friends.
